The Philadelphia Chromosome

Here's a graphic that shows the "Philadelphia Chromosome", the root cause of 95% of all cases of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML).

The exact chromosomal defect in Philadelphia chromosome is a translocation. Parts of two chromosomes, 9 and 22, swap places. The result is the creation of  a fusion gene called "bcr-abl", that activates a number of cell cycle-controlling proteins and enzymes, speeding up white blood cell division.
